Cedar Class - Y3

WELCOME TO CEDAR CLASS!

We are all working hard and having fun with our teachers -

Mrs Hammond, Mrs Jenner-Dyer (on Fridays) and Mrs Harrod.

This half term we shall begin with OUT TAKE ONE PICTURE WEEK where the whole school will look at the Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo.

Following this, we shall be investigating LIGHT AND SHADOWS. This will involve a science focus and a brilliant DT activity, which has been planned by Mr Bull, a DT specialist.

However, our main topic is AFRICA. This will involve a geography and art focus. Our Literacy for this work will be based on 'The Masai And I' which will involve us in comparative writing.

Amongst all of these exciting topics, we shall be studying more about Hinduism. This will include an exciting day to celebrate HOLI - led by our visitor Aly Greenway.

OUR FIRST TRIP OF THE YEAR IS TO CRESSWELL CRAGGS, ON MARCH 3RD 2020. THIS WILL LINK IN TO OUR TOPIC 'STONE AGE TO IRON AGE,' AS CHILDREN WILL BE ABLE TO VISIT A CAVE WHICH HAD REAL STONE AGE PEOPLE LIVING IN IT!

OUR SECOND TRIP IS ALSO NOW BOOKED - ON JUNE 2ND 2020 - TO TWYCROSS ZOO. THIS WILL DEVELOP OUR KNOWLEDGE OF ENDANGERED SPECIES. THIS WILL BE AT THE START OF THE TOPIC TO ENCOURAGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF WHY ANMIALS ARE BECOMING ENDANGERED AND TO IDENTIFY SPECIES THAT ARE UNDER THREAT.

Check out the topic web at the bottom of this page (INFO FOR PARENTS SECTION) for full details about our topic work for this half term.

WHAT ARE WE UP TO THIS WEEK?

Week  Beginning  - 20/1/20

Firstly, we shall be finishing our science topic, LIGHT AND SHADOWS by conducting a practical experiment and then, in Literacy, writing recounts and explanations about this. Linked to this we shall then complete our DT project; making torches. Following this, in Literacy, we shall be writing instructions.

In Maths, we shall be looking at perimeter - measuring and calculating perimeters of rectangles, triangles and compound shapes.

OUR EXCITING GYMNASTICS LESSON

Outdoor learning - floating a raft!

Still image for this video
Cedar class had the challenge to use only sticks, elastic bands and string to create a raft suitable for a Duplo Person to float on. After heavy rain for the entire week we were lucky enough to get outside for the afternoon to find the stream in the top woods beginning to flow. Here is one of our first teams finished with the task!
